Poetry Out Loud at the Merc
Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, 6PM
Poetry Out Loud (POL) is a national memorization and recitation contest that helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Each December, local high school students from Liberty Bell and the Independant Learning Centre (ILC) compete for slots at local, regional, and state POL competitions. Competitors in the event will have advanced from earlier competitions in their school classes. Students memorize and recite two poems and are judged on their memorization skills, as well as their confidence, projection and poise.
Winners of the local competition can advance to the Eastern Regional competition in Spokane on Feb. 1, 2024, and from there may qualify for the state finals.
Poetry Out Loud in the Methow Valley is presented in partnership with ArtsWA, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and Methow Arts. The Public School Funding Alliance and Trail’s End Bookstore also directly support the local program.
Liberty Bell High School and the Independent Learning Center (ILC) students will compete Dec. 13, at The Merc Playhouse in Twisp. This annual event starts at 6PM and is free to the public. Donations accepted.
